Only Say Beautiful Things About Yourself

A lesson from Mike Tyson's mentor, Cus D'Amato

"Only say beautiful things about yourself."

I love this line from Mike Tyson. He was on Theo Von's podcast talking about the impact of his mentor and trainer, Cus D'Amato, who told him early in his career that our mind doesn't know the difference between sarcasm and reality.

We hit our head and say to ourselves, "What a klutz"

We make a mistake and yell, "I'm such an idiot"

In the moment, it's just us, humoring ourselves. But deep down in the grey of our conscious and subconscious, words of discouragement can lay roots that whittle away at the foundation of our confidence and self-worth.

Only say beautiful things about yourself.

Good advice for anyone.

...even better advice for us Midwesterners, whose favorite pastime is self-deprecating humor. ;)
